OLD WOUNDS + PopMatters

With Old Wounds' sophomore album, The Suffering Spirit, out next Tuesday, June 30th on Good Fight Music, PopMatters is now hosting a stream of the entire album.

Listen to The Suffering Spirit in its entirety, here.

Pre-order, here.

Produced by Andreas Magnusson (The Black Dahlia Murder, Despised Icon), The Suffering Spirit sees Old Wounds rocking out on a whole new level of power, emotion, and hooks. Based in the heaviest hardcore purveyed by bands like Buried Alive and Disembodied, the New Jersey band has moved forward into the realm of melody while still honoring the past. PopMatters music editor Adrien Begrand sums it up:

"New Jersey hardcore band Old Wounds turned heads with their 2013 debut, From Where We Came Is Where We'll Rest, an album that burned with the intensity of classic '90s hardcore like Deadguy and contemporary crossover geniuses Converge. Two years later, they're set to release The Suffering Spirit, which broadens the band's sound even more, employing more cleanly sung melodies and streamlined, gothic-tinged arrangements without compromising the music's intensity one iota... Easily one of the better hardcore releases of the year so far."

A review posted on MetalSucks this week concurs:

"The powerhouse heaviness you crave is certainly here in spades but this Jersey bands has a few tricks up is sleeve as well.  A brooding Type O Negative vibe and a bit of Deftones-ish atonality... Vocalist Kevin Iavaroni's heart seems to be truly bleeding on every song..."

In support of The Suffering Spirit, Old Wounds will be out on the road all summer long, teaming up with Axis, Of Feather and Bone, and other bands along the way for what is being dubbed "The Summer of Suffering."

Tonight, June 25th, the band appears live on-air on New Jersey's WSOU Radio. Tune in at 7 pm to 89.5 FM in the New Jersey area or online at wsou.net.

–MetalSucks

"Emotionally charged, stylistically diverse metalcore, refreshingly devoid of the sugary melodies and bone-dumb breakdowns that propagate so freely within the mainstream hardcore scene... Frontman Kevin Iavaroni is capable of the razored vocal acrobatics of vets like Converge's Jacob Bannon, but he knows when to tone down his howls for a bit of La Dispute talk-singing. The instrumentation tends toward primal, primordial screamo... It's a furious – and meticulous – piece of work."
–Pitchfork

"Punishing New Jersey hardcore... On their second album, the upcoming The Suffering Spirit, New Jersey hardcore crew Old Wounds turns up the malevolence..."
–AllMusic

"This young New Jersey trio play metallic hardcore... which tips its hat to acts like Turmoil, Disembodied, and Buried Alive."
–Guitar World

"Old Wounds are making a name for themselves the old-fashioned way: getting in people's faces and freaking them out with punked-out metalcore."
–Alternative Press

"Youthful frantic hardcore sounds with churning metallic guitars... These guys are bringing '90s metallic hardcore back, taking influence from groups such as Turmoil and Indecision, and snowballing into a bigger piece of a new generation of hardcore."
–Mass Appeal

"Another high-powered speaker wrecker, turning the aggression way up on hardcore chugs and throat-charring screams."
