SELF DEFENSE FAMILY

Family Drugs proudly presents the new release by the prolific Self Defense Family: an EP titled The Corrections Officer in Me.

A new collaboration between Twelve Gauge Records boss Jihad Rabah and producer Sam Pura, Family Drugs will release The Corrections Officer in Me on August 27th as a limited edition 12" EP and digital download.

Originally known as End of a Year, Self Defense Family is a self-proclaimed post-hardcore collective, renowned for doing its own thing by its own rules. The Family claims Cohoes, New York as a hometown but in fact members have hailed from as far as London, and the lineup, never identical from one record to the next, has ranged from a trio to a ten-piece. S.D.F.'s vast catalog features releases recorded across the globe, from Jamaica to Iceland to the Bay Area, and put out via a diverse list of labels, Deathwish Inc, Run for Cover, and Hex Records among them.

The Corrections Officer in Me was written and recorded in one 24-hour period with producer and Family Drugs co-owner Sam Pura at The Panda Studios in Fremont, California, during S.D.F.'s US tour of summer 2011. As vocalist Patrick Kindlon quips, it was "written and record under time constraints to produce material that is anxious and uncomfortable". Completed in a day, the music finally surfaces two years later as he second-ever release on Family Drugs.

On The Corrections Officer in Me, the band nod to the world-weary storytelling of Lungfish and the driving tension of Killing Joke. Living up to the promise of inducing anxiety, they generate uncomfortable clashes of bombast and melody. Kindlon, a formidable wordsmith, spins impassioned yarns over hypnotic basslines and guitars that range from the aggro to the textural. From the call-to-arms of "It's Not Good for the Man to Be Alone" to the quiet meditation of "The Bomber Will Always Get Through", the intensity never lets up.

Further evidence of Kindlon's silver tongue comes from his onstage banter, known to comprise as much stage time as the music, and from the band's website, SelfDefenseMusic.com, which is set up entirely as a Q&A format wherein Kindlon and other members eloquently answer thousands of questions submitted by fans.

Outside of Self Defense Family, Kindlon writes comic books, co-owns comics publisher Ashcan Press, fronts another band, Drug Church, and runs the newly launched Harm Reduction label along with Jami Morgan of Code Orange Kids. A DIY force to be reckoned with, the chatty frontman sums it up neatly: "I try to stay busy."

The tracklist of The Corrections Officer in Me is as follows:

1) It's Not Good for the Man to Be Alone
2) Pop Song Written on the Automall
3) The Bomber Will Always Get Through

Family Drugs releases the record August 27th as a one-sided 12" EP, available in three colors, and a digital download. The cover features a stark black and white photo of Kindlon's face, intended as a tribute to Killing Joke's Brighter Than a Thousand Suns cover.

Family Drugs releases are distributed exclusively by Deathwish Inc.

NO SIR

Twelve Gauge Records announces the August 13th release of The Future Is Bright, the debut full-length album by No Sir.

From Santa Rosa, California, No Sir (featuring members of Sabertooth Zombie and Creative Adult) hail from within a flourishing circle of current West Coast hardcore punk bands - bands like Ghostlimb, Loma Prieta, Punch, Trash Talk, and Ceremony. Varying in style, these Golden State bands of today are bonded by a general aesthetic: highly artistic and intellectual yet determined to keep things raw, lo-fi, and DIY. Gut-level music for the thinking man. No Sir are representatives of this modern scene but can also be understood in a historical context, as heirs to the legacy of an older generation of Californians - the extreme hardcore punk bands that have filled the pages of Maximumrocknroll for years, from Dead and Gone to Talk Is Poison to Look Back and Laugh.

If you ask No Sir themselves, they'll add Wire and Nirvana to their list of influences too. All these references points are evident on the debut full-length, The Future Is Bright, as the band balance gloomy introspection and forward-charging aggression with a perfect sense of rock songwriting that makes every song as much a hummable hit as a punk rock exorcism.

Check out the recent premiere of "Anxiety Consumption", off The Future Is Bright, a song that starts as a depressive waltz and picks up into an all-out shout-along anthem of the dispossessed.

And an older live performance by No Sir from "The Waiting Room" series, featured by Alternative Press Magazine.

As for non-musical influences, No Sir list Camus, Sagan, and Lynch among others, giving a glimpse into the wide range of inspiration that's hidden behind the music.

Engineered, mixed, and mastered by Comadre guitarist Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden, The Future Is Bright was tracked live in the studio to capture the true energy of the band. Shirley is a go-to producer for the West Coast scene, having helped make records for Deafheaven, Graf Orlock, Ghostlimb, Loma Prieta, and more.

The tracklist of The Future Is Bright is as follows:

1) Intro
2) The Crowd
3) C.A.L.I.F.O.R.N.I.A.
4) Anxiety Consumption
5) I Doubt You'll Ever Swim Again
6) Wet Worlds
7) I Pushed Back
8) Interlude
9) The Baseline Percentage
10) Bad Vibes
11) Mama I'm a Good Boy

Twelve Gauge Records will release the album August 13th as a limited edition, 12" vinyl LP (in three colors) and digital download. A Bay Area stalwart since 2004, Twelve Gauge began by releasing the debut by Heavy Heavy Low Low and went on to put out music by Power, Sabertooth Zombie, Purple Mercy, Throats, and more. Twelve Gauge Records releases are exclusively distributed by Deathwish Inc.

No Sir are confirmed to play The Fest 12 in Gainesville, Florida this fall. More live dates will be announced soon.

OLD WOUNDS/TRENCHFOOT split

For its next release, Southern California label Melotov Records sets it sights eastward for a split seven-inch featuring two ferocious young East Coast hardcore prospects: Old Wounds and Trenchfoot. The Old Wounds/Trenchfoot split is set for an August 13th vinyl and digital release on Melotov.

New Jersey trio Old Wounds, whose debut album, From Where We Came Is Where We'll Rest, dropped in February to a storm of acclaim, have been touring all year, refining their live game alongside bands like Full of Hell. Taking their cues from metallic hardcore greats like Turmoil, Buried Alive, and Indecision, Old Wounds inject new life into the crushing, exhilarating vibe once wielded by that older generation of bands. Pitchfork.com described Old Wounds' debut as "lashing ahead at a furious hardcore clip... [it] pairs the maudlin pages of high school diaries with a grown-ass band's concision and power." With a schedule of over 70 shows so far in 2013, the workhorses show no signs of slowing down. They are confirmed to play the heralded The Power of the Riff Festival in Los Angeles in August as part of a full US summer tour and they plan to hit Europe this fall with none other than Trenchfoot.

Old Wounds' side of the Melotov split was recorded by Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations (Pulling Teeth, Full of Hell) and mastered by Dan Randall at Mammoth Sound (Capitalist Casualties, Magrudergrind).

From upstate New York's Hudson Valley, Trenchfoot are another awesome young band carrying forth the metallic hardcore power of their older brothers' era into a new realm. Their dark, heavy sound nods to the manic depression of Cursed and the epic crust of Tragedy, and they have cut their teeth in the past two years playing with every hardcore band that matters, from Agnostic Front to Converge.

Trenchfoot's side of the Melotov split was recorded by Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations and mastered by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance East (Terror, Coliseum). Both of Trenchfoot's two prior releases - a self-titled 7" and the Endless Disgust 7" - were recorded by Converge's Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio.

The Old Wounds/Trenchfoot split seven-inch tracklist is as follows:

Old Wounds
1) An Ode to Love
2) The Sharpest Knife for the Blackest Heart

Trenchfoot
1) Hexing Hope
2) Come to Find
3) No Escape
4) Crimes of the Mind

PHANTOM GLUE

Black Market Activities presents Phantom Glue's second album, A War of Light Cones, set for a July 16th release.

Boston, Massachusetts crushers, equally versed in sludge, doom, and noise rock, Phantom Glue churn out their self-proclaimed "avalanche of distortion" with nods to Neurosis, Trouble, and The Jesus Lizard throughout. Colossal drums and bass charge forth while twin guitars cast evil spells. Exclaim! Magazine has hailed the band's sweet, mountain-moving din as "a heated bastion of caustic riffs and unearthly girth". Decibel Magazine praised their 2010 debut as, simply, "a headbanger's journey".

Beneath the music lies a heavy H.P. Lovecraft vibe, conjured through the supernatural lyrics and cover art of vocalist/guitarist Matt Oates. Oates describes A War of Light Cones specifically as "a nightmare/occult alternate history of Colonial America". A perfect sample of Phantom Glue's sound and vision, lead track "Perils" tells the tale of a trapper catching a creature whose pelt grants psychic gifts. Stream "Perils" here via The Boston Phoenix!

Phantom Glue's second album and their first for BMA, A War of Light Cones was produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio (Torche, Today Is The Day). Ballou's connection to Phantom Glue dates back to the 90s when he and Matt Oates were bandmates in The Huguenots.

Phantom Glue's lineup is completed by guitarist Mike Gowell, bassist/vocalist Nick Wolf, and drummer Kyle Rasmussen.

A War of Light Cones' tracklist is as follows:

1) Perils
2) Captain Keith Pierce
3) Neurolizard
4) Bow in the Dust
5) Biocult
6) Arboreal
7) Test Pattern

The album will be available as a color vinyl 12" LP, with digital download, and can be pre-ordered here!

STOMACH EARTH

Black Market Activities presents the self-titled debut album by Stomach Earth, the solo project of The Red Chord guitarist and founder Mike "Gunface" McKenzie, set for a July 16th release. Massive, creeping death-doom of the underworld, Stomach Earth summons the vast void of early Godflesh and the morbid grandeur of early Cathedral, creating a new futuristic sound that is transfixing and heavy as hell.

Like a single wave swallowing a city, Stomach Earth wields maximum power through minimum means. Glacial tempos and minimal programmed drums allow for a clarity that absolutely devastates. McKenzie, known across the globe as a technical metal shredder, chooses instead with Stomach Earth to do his killing slowly and methodically. The results are awe-inspiring. Monolithic and glistening with cinematic sheen, Stomach Earth demands to be cranked to 11.

Surrender to the hypnotic trance and headbang in slow-motion to Stomach Earth's "Watchers", here!

The sole mastermind behind Stomach Earth, McKenzie wrote all the album's music and lyrics, sang and played all the instruments. The self-recorded, self-mixed album was mastered by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance East.

The album's tracklist is as follows:

1) Void Angel Ritual
2) Watchers
3) Haunted by the Living
4) Prolong the Death Watch
5) The One They Fear
6) Reaching the Threshold
7) Claimed

Stomach Earth will be available as a color vinyl 12" LP, with digital download, and can be pre-ordered here!

TIGER FLOWERS Cruisin'

Those familiar with New York City's Tiger Flowers know that they build upon the darkest metallic hardcore vibes of bands like Deadguy and Kiss It Goodbye, and that frontman Jesse Madre's intensity and sincerity are unmatched - and that all this is oddly-yet-perfectly balanced by the fact that Madre riffs like a stand-up comedian onstage and that the band cite early Motley Crue as a key inspiration. A staple of the New York scene, possessing a storied live show that has been described as both a tribal ceremony and a keg party gone wrong, Tiger Flowers have released one self-titled EP to date and are currently at work on their debut full-length album with producer Elliot Geller (Malignancy, Dim Mak) and mastering engineer Shane Frisby (Turmoil, Revocation). There is no label confirmed to release the album as of yet.

The band have teamed up with Lambgoat.com to reveal the first glimpse of the as-yet-untitled new album, in the form of a short, sharp shock of a song called "Cruisin' 'Til the Wheels Fall Off". Stream the song here!

Kicking off with the lyrics, "Goddamn, it was crazy / Deep in the jungle at eighteen / For the American dream", the song is apparently inspired by Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo character. Frontman Jesse Madre explains:

"There's the scene in First Blood where Rambo is talking with the colonel about how he thought it was going to be different when he got back, how he and his buddies were going to go cruisin'. They were just going to cruise until the wheels fell off but all his friends had died, some of them right next to him. I have friends who are in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. I have friends who have kids over there and their kids are watching their buddies get blown up. Whether you believe in the war or not, motherfuckers are dying. I think Rambo nails it in that first movie, what it was like to come home to a country that didn't want you."

Madre gives some further insight into the new album:

"Going in this time we basically went in there with the 'fuck you' Motley Crue attitude, that we were just going to play our music loud and fast and see what happens. Overall I think this record has a much more rock n' roll feel to it. The songs we have done are shorter, with the same dynamics that make us Tiger Flowers but a more rock approach that's a little more to the point. I think it's very much a Tiger  Flowers record but from the future."

Stay tuned for more news as Tiger Flowers continue work on the debut album, and see the band live at these shows:

Tiger Flowers, Hush:
June 21 - River Head, NY @ Wild Wood Bowling Alley
June 22 - Brooklyn, NY @ Public Assembly

Tiger Flowers, East of the Wall:

O.W. are a killer young metallic hardcore band from Jersey, reviving the spirit of bands like Turmoil and Buried Alive for the next generation. Trenchfoot are a like-minded bunch from upstate New York who have recorded with Converge’s Kurt Ballou, and the two set out to tour the nation today!

A Bay Area hardcore punk band, coming out of the current California scene of poetic, artistic types keeping it raw and DIY - bands like Ghostlimb, Loma Prieta, and Trash Talk. S.D.F. nod to the world-weary storytelling vibe of Lungfish as well as the driving tension of Killing Joke. This is a band of intelligent people doing their own thing by their own rules.

Fall ’13 - NERVOUS - title tba - Twelve Gauge Records
With members of Loma Prieta, this Bay Area crew bang it out like a punker Nirvana on their awesome debut!

Fall ’13 - TIGER FLOWERS - title tba - label tba
In the studio now! Tiger Flowers build upon the darkest metallic hardcore vibes of bands like Deadguy and Kiss It Goodbye, and frontman Jesse Madre's intensity and sincerity are unmatched... and all this is oddly-yet-perfectly balanced by the fact that Madre riffs like a stand-up comedian and that the band cite early 80's Motley Crue as a key inspiration. They were a staple of my Precious Metal shows and they're now a standout of the New York scene at large. The debut full-length is being recorded and mixed by Elliot Geller (Malignancy, Dim Mak) and mastered by Shane Frisby (Turmoil, Revocation).

Fall ’13 - MEEK IS MURDER - title tba - label tba

Features ex-The Red Chord guitarist Mike Keller and Metal Injection boss Frank Godla on drums. This is their second full length - and second to be produced by Converge's Kurt Ballou and mastered by Alan Douches (Mastodon, Dillinger Escape Plan, so many more...)

Fall ’13 - CZAR - title tba - label tba
Recording this summer! Direct support for Killing Joke on a full US tour this spring, Chicago’s Czar prepare to record their second full-length with Hum frontman Matt Talbott producing. Ominous atmospheres, machine-like metal and colossal hooks are the trademark. Glowing comparisons to Gojira and Mastodon abound.

Fall ’13 - PYRRHON - title tba - Selfmadegod Records
Recording this summer! A band I’ve called “NYC's best death metal band” for years will probably transcend that tag entirely with their new album, moving beyond any such simple description. The technical meets the visceral: these young virtuosos rip out dazzling, twisted, extreme metal yet without the stink of showboating. As sick as the playing is, this is music from the gut, perhaps inspired by Swans as much as by Gorguts, and intensified by a sincerely unhinged vocal delivery conveying true urban despair. Ryan Jones (Today Is The Day, Mutilation Rites, Wetnurse) produces.

TIGER FLOWERS in the studio

The New York City wrecking balls known as Tiger Flowers are at work on their debut full-length album. Those familiar with Tiger Flowers know that they build upon the darkest metallic hardcore vibes of bands like Deadguy and Kiss It Goodbye, and that frontman Jesse Madre's intensity and sincerity are unmatched... and that all this is oddly-yet-perfectly balanced by the fact that Madre riffs like a stand-up comedian onstage and that the band cite early Motley Crue as a key inspiration. They were a staple of my Precious Metal shows and they're now a standout of the New York scene at large. They have released only one self-titled EP so far and I can't wait for them to really make their mark with the full-length. It's being recorded and mixed by Elliot Geller (Malignancy, Dim Mak) and mastered by Shane Frisby (Turmoil, Revocation). As of today, there is no label confirmed for it.
