Strategically Placed Bananas is out March 10th on Three One G and can be pre-ordered now, here. As VICE's Charlie Ambler states, Hot Nerds' "spastic, demented, synth-heavy sound encapsulates all the insanity that is 2015."

The San Diego band has deep ties to Three One G and its 20-year history of oddball hardcore, noise, and electronics. Hot Nerds frontman Nathan Joyner plays in All Leather with Three One G founder Justin Pearson and also formerly played with Pearson in Some Girls.

Hot Nerds pumps out smirking, throbbing synth-punk with a vibe every bit as acidic as that of The Locust or Arab on Radar. Strategically Placed Bananas drips with vitriol and humor in equal doses. Lyrics about anxieties, addictions, and nihilism, delivered via Joyner's nasal whine, clash with bouncy hooks and illustrator Josh Freydkis' '80s-defiling cover art. 

The album was recorded and mixed by Nathan Joyner at his own studio, Cereal & Soda, and mastered by Brent Asbury (Retox, Warsawwasraw). It follows a self-titled EP, also on Three One G.

SABERTOOTH ZOMBIE - Human Performance IV



Following up its release of the new Youth Funeral EP, San Francisco label Twelve Gauge Records presents its next offering: Human Performance IV, by Sabertooth Zombie.

Out March 3rd on Twelve Gauge, Human Performance IV is Sabertooth Zombie's fifteenth (!) release since forming in Northern California a decade ago and, as the title suggests, it is the fourth (and final) EP in the band's "Human Performance" series.

Hailing from Santa Rosa and surrounding towns in the North Bay, Sabertooth Zombie's roots go deep in that area's hardcore punk scene. Peers include Trash Talk, Ceremony, and Creative Adult; the Tooth has toured the US and Europe with Ceremony, among other bands. Two members also play in No Sir, whose 2013 album, The Future Is Bright, was released on Twelve Gauge to much acclaim.

With Sabertooth Zombie, hardcore punk evolves into something new: a noisy, driving, hard-rockin' wall of sound, where the band members' love of classic rock, stoner jams, and outlaw country gets a chance to shine. In describing itself, the band drops names like Merle Haggard and Pink Floyd, alongside other influences like whiskey, beer, the great outdoors, and American literature. This is a band wherein the highbrow and lowbrow collide – atop dirt-rock barn-burning and caveman bashing, frontman Cody Sullivan spits electrifying lines of poetry, such as these from Human Performance IV's closer, "Crazy Endings": 

"We slept outside all summer long / Moon aware and vastly waxing / Eating up the southern yokes / Talking about anything attractive / That was when the mountains had more and the sea had less / Now we put deep thinkers in the deep end and program the television... / A mega ton hazing from the idiot A-bomb."

Yet make no mistake: while Sabertooth Zombie might be all about guitar solos and Jack Kerouac, taking inspiration from anywhere but the hardcore scene, one look at its live carnival reveals the band's true colors: they still make the kids stage dive like maniacs. HOLLOW EARTH video

Detroit-area doomsday machine Hollow Earth has premiered a new video for "The Reclamation," the opening song off its latest LP, Silent Graves, released in November 2014 on Panic Records.

Directed by Nick Holland of Diamond Dead Media, the video portrays bleak, post-apocalyptic vibes, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, and fitting of Hollow Earth's cautionary hardcore.

Hollow Earth frontman Steve Muczynski states, "The video for 'The Reclamation' reflects the lyrics of the song and paints a picture of the post-apocalyptic world we're currently headed toward with the decisions we make as a society."

Silent Graves was produced by Andy Nelson (Harm's Way, Weekend Nachos) and mastered by Brad Boatright (Integrity, Nails).

OUTER HEAVEN + CVLT Nation

The mighty Outer Heaven has revealed another new track off its upcoming Diabolus Vobiscum EP. This one, a 7-minute epic titled "Vault of Whispers," makes its debut via CVLT Nation and is now streaming here.

Outer Heaven's Diabolus Vobiscum will be released February 10th on Melotov Records and can be pre-ordered now from Melotov, here.

The young Pennsylvania band churns out old-school death metal of the minimal, mid-tempo variety, soaked in vile, unearthly doom vibes. CVLT Nation hails it as "pummeling riffs... putrid death doom."

YOUTH FUNERAL + Alternative Press

With its second EP, See You When I See You, out tomorrow, January 27th, on Twelve Gauge Records, Youth Funeral has teamed with Alternative Press to offer a stream of the entire record.

YOUTH FUNERAL + Noisey



Noisey has premiered Youth Funeral's "Weak But Warm," a track off the band's second EP, See You When I See You, out next Tuesday, January 27th, on Twelve Gauge Records.

GRIEVER + Decibel

The newest Griever track, "The Tie That Grinds," is now streaming here via Decibel Magazine.

The song appears on new album Our Love Is Different, out February 24th on Vitriol Records.

Consisting of two members of former Deathwish Inc hardcore act Lewd Acts, the San Diego band bashes out a gruff, driving, bittersweet racket that nods to their local Swami Records garage punk scene as well as to the Melvins/Floor school of transcendent sludge.

In the words of Decibel's Kevin Stewart-Panko, Griever's sound is "a massive skate bowl/melting pot of melodic punk, dissonant hardcore, emo straight from the basement of the '90s and melancholic post-punk."

Our Love Is Different is the band's first full length. It follows an EP, Inferior, also on Vitriol Records. Our Love Is Different was recorded by Griever frontman Alex Jacobelli, with Tommy Garcia, and was mastered by Nick Zampiello (Converge, Coliseum) at New Alliance.

Three One G Records celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2014 – read all about it, here! – and the game-changing, San Diego-based label, owned by Justin Pearson of The Locust, Retox, All Leather, Some Girls, Head Wound City, Swing Kids, and more, is busy as ever in 2015, kicking off the year with the debut LP by Hot Nerds.

NASTY - Shokka

Following up The Banner's Greying LP and Old Wounds' Death Projection EP, Good Fight Music kicks off 2015 with the US release of Shokka, the new album by Euro hardcore kings Nasty.

Shokka's US release is set for February 24th on Good Fight, with the European release being handled by Beatdown Hardwear (Xibalba, Twitching Tongues).

Founded over a decade ago in La Calamine, Belgium, Nasty chucked subtlety out the window long ago in its quest for beatdown purity. Led by animated frontman Matthi, the dudes achieve comic levels of awesome via unrepentant, double-bass-driven breakdowns and Belgian-accented mosh incitements. Shokka is the band's fifth album to date.


As the authority on all 'core, Sergeant D, reported on MetalSucks: "This band is fucking sweet – breakdowns upon breakdowns upon breakdowns."

Check out the video for Shokka's title track, here, for a taste of Nasty's vibe, described by at least one critic as "the Die Antwoord of hardcore."

Unarguably one of the hardest working bands in its scene, Nasty has toured Europe, the US, Brazil, Japan, China, and South Korea, with such bands as Suicidal Tendencies, Terror, Madball, and Bane. Next up is a headlining European tour in March with support from Lionheart, Cruel Hand and more.

OUTER HEAVEN + Invisible Oranges

Invisible Oranges has premiered the newest Outer Heaven track, "That Which Was Taken," off the band's Melotov Records debut, Diabolus Vobiscum.

Diabolus Vobiscum comes out on Melotov on February 10th, kicking off the year for the label and furthering the hot streak that included new releases in 2014 by ACxDC, Tiger Flowers, Seizures, and more.

Outer Heaven rocks a totally evil doom-death sound that finds a home within today's hardcore scene thanks to its rock-solid rhythms and ability to elicit maximum smiles/violence from any crowd. Unearthly vocals, mournful doom riffs, and caveman death-grooves add up to something wonderful. As Invisible Oranges' Kelly Kettering writes, "Outer Heaven have managed to mesh the genres in a sparse yet doomy way..."

HIRAM-MAXIM

Brooklyn label Aqualamb Records announces its first release of 2015: the self-titled debut album by Hiram-Maxim, out March 3rd.

From Brooklyn, New York, Aqualamb Records is a new label with a new approach to releasing music. Run by graphic designers Eric Palmerlee and Johnathan Swafford, Aqualamb is "inspired by the lack of album art in the age of invisible music." In lieu of standard album packaging, Aqualamb's releases take the form of 100-page, bound, printed books – essentially, each album's art and liner notes, traditionally confined to an LP gatefold, a CD booklet, or the screen of some music-playing device, are reconfigured into book form. Each book also includes a download code for the music.

With a handful of releases out so far, a clear aesthetic has already taken shape. Like the 33 1/3 books or the catalogs of record labels like Young God and Sacred Bones, Aqualamb's releases are very much part of a series, adding up to a distinct, visually unified experience. 

Aqualamb's next release, the self-titled debut album by Cleveland, Ohio band Hiram-Maxim, is set for a March 3rd release. Named for the 19th-century inventor of the Maxim machine gun, Hiram-Maxim plumb the darkest depths of eerie, drunken psych, in line with Pink Floyd's early jams or the creepiest crawlings of Oxbow and US Maple. 

Hiram-Maxim's debut consists of four songs, spanning 36 minutes. Frontman Fred Gunn whispers, groans, and howls as he details tragic deaths, self-destruction, and cannibalistic love. Dave Taha's guitars lay down heavy blues then veer out into the uneasy ambience of Moore/Ranaldo space, melding with Lisa Miralia's electronics to create a bed of paranoid textures. On drums, John Panza keeps it sparse and loose, goading the songs along on winding rambles toward their final destinations.

Hiram-Maxim is a free-form, free-falling affair – spacious and improvisational. Live, natural, and totally unsettling, the album sounds as if it was recorded in one take in the attic of a haunted house. In truth, it is reported to have been recorded and mixed by John Delzoppo at Negative Space in Cleveland, Ohio and mastered by Chris Keffer at Magnetic North.

GRIEVER - Our Love Is Different

Vitriol Records kicks off 2015 with the February 24th release of Griever's debut full-length, Our Love Is Different.

Vitriol Records is the celebrated, Los Angeles-based label owned by Justin Smith of Graf Orlock, Ghostlimb, and Dangers. Through Vitriol, Smith has released music by all his own bands as well as Thou, Birds In Row, Comadre, and more, and has adorned it with some of the coolest art and packaging of this millennium. (Witness Graf Orlock's Doombox here, for example.) The Vitriol brand has come to represent the progression of hardcore punk, fueled by an obsessive DIY ethic and antagonistic spirit.

From San Diego, Griever features vocalist/guitarist Alex Jacobelli and drummer Cory Groenenberg, both members of former Deathwish Inc hardcore punkers Lewd Acts.

In Griever, Jacobelli belts out world-weary gruffness and lights up the skies with radiant guitars, while Groenenberg drives forward, steady and straight as a tunnel-borer. Along with guitarist guitarist Orlando Ramirez and bassist Wes Sisk, they pound out an impassioned racket – a heavy, rock-solid version of post-hardcore that pummels and uplifts, equally – inspired by the melodic sludge of the Melvins-Karp-Floor-Torche circle as well as the garage punk scene epitomized by hometown San Diego label Swami Records (Hot Snakes, et al.)

Our Love Is Different was recorded by Tommy Garcia and Alex Jacobelli at SDRL and Thrill Me Studios, and mixed by Jacobelli at Thrill Me. The album was mastered by Nick Zampiello (Converge, Coliseum) at New Alliance. 

Our Love Is Different follows 2011's Inferior EP, also on Vitriol, and a 3-way split with VYGR and At Our Heels, on Creator-Destructor Records.

YOUTH FUNERAL + New Noise
