OvO - Creatura

OvO presents new album Creatura – the band's ninth full-length album since 2000.

Based in Ravenna, Italy, OvO is the duo of Stefania Pedretti and Bruno Dorella. Counting Swans and Diamanda Galas as their biggest influences, Pedretti and Dorella create raw anthems out of primitive industrial sounds and Pedretti's theatrically demonic vocals.

Dorella pounds out minimal cadences on a mix of acoustic and electronic percussion, as Pedretti casts spells in her own arcane language –"there are no lyrics," she explains. A combination of guitars and synths sets a driving, end-of-the-world tone.

The vibe is utterly dark but fun as well, as evidenced by the new video for Creatura's opening track, "Satanam" – the clip, directed by Natalia Saurin, brings to mind an occult version of Die Antwoord. Dorella describes it as "the discovery of a secret, a revelation that involves the freaky inhabitants of a caravan. Invocations and rituals bring OvO to them. In this story, OvO are the tree of life and death, an underground door to other dimensions."

Watch "Satanam," here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohDPRWKSd4A

Two of OvO's previous albums were released via Providence label Load Records – the OvO sound is right at home amidst the Load camp of freak-rockers like Lightning Bolt and Arab on Radar, and noise king Prurient. Other kindred spirits include Thrones, Gnaw, and Nadja, all of whom OvO has toured with over the years, adding up to a total of almost 1,000 shows played so far, across Europe, Asia, and North America.

Creatura will be released December 9th on Italian label Dio Drone. The album was recorded by Lorenzo Stecconi (Zu, Ufomammut) at a theater company's warehouse in Ravenna, Italy; it was mixed by Giulio Favero, and mastered by Giovanni Versari (Muse).

OvO will be touring throughout 2017.

BODY STUFF - "World of Men"

The third single off my new EP, Body Stuff 2, debuted today via No Echo.

"Of all his work, Body Stuff might be the closest to Reynolds' heart. The solo project serves as a vessel for the NYC-based musician to indulge his various influences in the worlds of industrial, '80s pop, and post-punk. Composed in a house on a lake in Maine, Body Stuff 2 is a forthcoming EP from the project that brings to mind something legendary Long Island new wave-leaning radio station WLIR would have played in the late '80s."
–No Echo

As a young kid, I was raised by my mom and my sister. There were some tough times. We were broke. We moved a lot. There was no father figure in sight. But there was a lot of love between us. For a few years in the late '80s, we lived in a house in the country in Maine, a mile down a dirt road, next to a blueberry field. My mom and I would split wood with an axe to heat the house. I was thinking back to those years when I wrote "World of Men." The song is a tribute to the women who raised me, and the life we had.

HOLLOW EARTH + Metal Injection

"Dead Planet is soaked in heavy, and drips with beauty..."
–Metal Injection

"Moody, tribal, and groovy... One of the finest metallic hardcore acts on the scene today."
–MetalSucks

Hollow Earth have revealed new video "Of Steel and Stone" today via Metal Injection.

Taken from upcoming new album Dead Planet, the song features guest vocals by John Pettibone of Heiress and formerly Himsa and Undertow.

Watch, here:
http://www.metalinjection.net/video/hollow-earth-of-steel-and-stone-video-brings-the-epic-heavy

The video's epic nature shots complement the song's slow, stately momentum. As Metal Injection puts it, Hollow Earth's sound is "soaked in heavy, and drips with beauty." Reference points include the lumbering doom-core of Neurosis and the space-rock of Failure.

Dead Planet, the followup and conceptual sci-fi sequel to the Parting Remains EP, comes out December 2nd on Good Fight Music.

Also making guest appearances are Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder, and Tad Doyle of Tad. The album was produced by Misery Signals' Greg Thomas, and mastered by Bill Henderson at Azimuth Mastering.

Led by the gut-wrenching screams of frontwoman powerhouse Mers Sumida, Black Table presents a version of extreme music that twists, turns, weaves, and unravels. On Obelisk, black metal anguish and post-rock atmospheres collude in new and thrilling ways.

Sumida says new album Obelisk is a concept album, dealing with "depression as a human condition, explored through the mythologies of various cultures, like Aztec, Mohawk Indian and European literature."

Obelisk was recorded at Backroom Studios, mixed by Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Sleep, Leviathan) and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Krallice).

Drummer Michael Kadnar and bassist DJ Scully are both members of the reformed The Number Twelve Looks Like You; Kadnar also drums for German act Downfall of Gaia).

"Jarringly intense new album inspired by mythology, suffering, and depression... Mixed by Billy Anderson and mastered by Colin Marston, Obelisk elevates the atmospheric black metal tag, stripping away the semi-genre's assumed lightweight prettiness in favor of unapologetic aggression and a solid understanding of the cruciality of heaviness."

"Black/death/doom/self-loathing-core... Sun-dimming atrocity."
–Decibel

"Proggy, blackened metal... like a puddle of boiled oil, full of broken glass."

BODY STUFF - "Cabin Song"

The second single off my new EP, Body Stuff 2, debuted today via MetalSucks.

"Creepy, beautiful, inspiring, and an interesting example of the kinds of uncommon influences that can work in heavy music today... 'Cabin Song' starts as a haunting, almost goth-ish post-rock tune that then opens up into a deluge of heavy riffs and sweaty, groaned vocals... When Reynolds sings about staying up late, you can feel the night moving on into the wee hours, and your sanity stretching thin accordingly... And though Reynolds is a New York metal star, the music on the record was written in a cabin on a lake in Maine, which explains the songs theme and eerie atmosphere."

AXIS + SERAPH THE LIGHT

Axis and Seraph The Light have teamed up and recorded a new EP together as one band. Produced by Torche's Jon Nunez and mastered by Brad Boatright (Nails, Author & Punisher), the collab, titled Axis / Seraph The Light, will be released on Good Fight Music in 2017.

In December the two bands will hit the road, performing the new songs together onstage.

Dec 2 - Tampa, FL @ Lucky You Tattoo
Dec 3 - Miami, FL @ The Granary
Dec 5 - Atlanta, GA @ 529
Dec 6 - Nashville, TN @ The End
Dec 7 - Memphis, TN @ Rock House Live
Dec 8 - Birmingham, AL @ The Firehouse
Dec 9 - Tallahassee, FL @ Adelaide Schnittman Hall

Nick Cox of Seraph The Light states, "After years of our bands playing shows together whenever we could, we finally decided to go on tour last December. We knew that we wanted to do something special for the tour, so we decided we should try to play some songs together. Separately we don't sound anything alike but we had such a respect for each other's songwriting, we knew we would be able to come up with material we could all be proud of. This record was written from city to city, wherever we could jam before or after a show."

Tommy Cantwell of Axis adds, "We wanted to bring a lot of different influences into the songs since we all listen to very different types of music. The obvious influences are bands like Cult of Luna, Neurosis, Isis, and stuff like that. But also some not-so-obvious bands like Queens of the Stone Age and Chelsea Wolfe... Having eight people onstage all at once was pretty wild and definitely different than our regular set. We're really looking forward to this tour in December."

Head scratching timing, face ripping riffage, and start-stop precision that gives bands like Meshuggah a run for their money."

HOLLOW EARTH - Dead Planet

"Moody, tribal, and groovy... One of the finest metallic hardcore acts on the scene today."
–MetalSucks

Hollow Earth announces new album Dead Planet, coming December 2nd on Good Fight Music.

Dead Planet sees the Detroit-area band continue to slow down its metallic hardcore and soar through outerspace, a trajectory it has been on since its debut EP, 2012's We Are Not Humanity. On Dead Planet, Hollow Earth owns this sound. The album is an epic trip, informed by the lurching doom-core of Neurosis and the space-rock of Failure. Heavy and poignant and ever advancing forward, it is the sound of hurtling through endless expanses. In fact, Dead Planet's lyrics tell the story of a sci-fi tale the band created, picking up where the early 2016 EP, Parting Remains, left off. Over the mesmerizing weight of "Astral Dominion," the album's first words resound: "Astral dominion of the untold beyond / the radial point of human mastery / buried in darkness, no anchor to drag / I have become the man I was meant to be." Dead Planet is a journey, in every sense.

Stream "From Empyrean to Damnation," featuring guest vocals by Trevor Strnad of The Black Dahlia Murder, here on MetalSucks:

Dead Planet was produced by Misery Signals' Greg Thomas, and mastered by Bill Henderson at Azimuth Mastering.

ION DISSONANCE + Stereogum

"A jarring, relentless listen, forever tantalizing listeners with meaty grooves that last just long enough to make the next flight of blinding technicality that much more disorienting. Ion Dissonance are absolute masters of this brains-and-brawn dichotomy."
–Stereogum

"One of the most intense albums of 2016, period."
–MetalSucks

Stereogum has premiered new Ion Dissonance track "Perpetually Doomed: The Sisyphean Task," off the Montreal band's upcoming new album, Cast the First Stone.

A monstrous comeback after five years' silence, Cast the First Stone will be released November 18th on Good Fight Music.

Stereogum's Doug Moore exalts Ion Dissonance's vexing puzzles of technicality and groove, calling the band "absolute masters of this brains-and-brawn dichotomy."

Listen, here:
http://www.stereogum.com/1904509/ion-dissonance-perpetually-doomed-the-sisyphean-task/mp3s/

Ion Dissonance first mixed dizzying math and earthquaking heaviness back in the early/mid '00s and, along with bands like Despised Icon and The Red Chord, set the stage for hundreds of like-minded bands to follow. Ion Dissonance's impact on the current state of metal and hardcore is massive – and with new album Cast the First Stone, these forefathers have returned to continue pushing the genre forward.
